Measuring AI Visibility: Which Tools and Metrics Should You Use?

Wouter·7 augustus 2026·8 min leestijd
TL;DR

Track your AI visibility with a monthly protocol: test your business in ChatGPT and Perplexity, monitor citation sources, and measure structured data coverage to know if your GEO investment is working.

You've added schema markup. You've created an llms.txt file. You're regularly publishing content with concrete numbers. But how do you know if it's working? How do you measure whether AI search engines are actually recommending your business?

That's the question most business owners don't ask. They invest in GEO without ever measuring whether it delivers results. That stops today.

Why measuring AI visibility is different

With SEO, you have Google Search Console. You see exactly how many times your page was shown, how often it was clicked, and what position you rank. Clear, measurable, real-time.

With GEO, that dashboard doesn't exist. There's no "ChatGPT Search Console." No "Perplexity Analytics." The tools aren't there yet — or they've just arrived.

That doesn't mean you can't measure. It means you need to measure differently.

The three levels of AI visibility

Level 1: Are you mentioned?

The most basic question. Does your business name appear when someone asks a relevant question to an AI model?

Level 2: Are you recommended?

There's a difference between "being mentioned in a list of ten" and "being recommended as the top choice." AI models often provide a ranked list or a primary recommendation with alternatives.

Level 3: Are you correctly described?

When AI mentions you, is the information accurate? Correct services, correct region, correct price indication? Incorrect mentions are sometimes worse than no mention at all.

Method 1: Manual testing (free, do it right now)

The most reliable method is also the simplest: ask the questions yourself.

Which platforms to test?

Platform Type Why test
ChatGPT Conversational Largest user base, 200M+ weekly users
Perplexity Search-focused Cites sources explicitly, growing in business use
Google Gemini Integrated Appears in Google search results (AI Overviews)
Microsoft Copilot Integrated Appears in Bing and Microsoft products
Claude Conversational Growing adoption, different training data

Which questions to ask?

Ask at least 10 questions your potential customers would ask. Vary across:

Generic:

  • "Best [your service] in [your city]"
  • "Which company can help me with [your specialization]?"

Specific:

  • "[Your service] specialized in [niche] in [region]"
  • "Which [profession] has the best reviews in [city]?"

Problem-oriented:

  • "I have [problem], which company can help?"
  • "What does [service] cost on average in [region]?"

Comparative:

  • "[Competitor A] or [competitor B], who's better for [specific service]?"
  • "Alternatives to [competitor] in [region]"

How to document?

Create a spreadsheet with these columns:

Date Platform Query Mentioned? Position Correct? Source cited?
08-07 ChatGPT Best plumber Rotterdam Yes #2 Yes No
08-07 Perplexity Best plumber Rotterdam No - - -

Test the same questions every month. This reveals trends.

Important: Log out before testing. AI models personalize answers based on your history. Test in an incognito window or with a new account.

Method 2: Perplexity as a measurement tool

Perplexity is unique because it cites sources. That makes it the best free tool to measure your GEO performance.

What you can measure with Perplexity:

  • Whether your website is cited as a source
  • Which specific page is cited
  • In what context you're mentioned (positive, neutral, comparative)
  • Which competitors are mentioned in the same answers

Process:

  1. Ask 10 relevant questions in Perplexity
  2. For each answer, note: which sources are cited?
  3. Is your website among them? Which page?
  4. Which competitors are cited?

Repeat monthly. After three months, you have a trend line.

Method 3: Specialized tools

The GEO tools market is growing rapidly. These are the tools that are currently useful:

Otterly.ai

  • What it does: Monitors if your brand appears in AI answers
  • Platforms: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews
  • Price: From $25/month
  • Best for: SMBs who want to monitor structurally

Profound

  • What it does: Analyzes how AI models describe your brand and competitors
  • Platforms: Multiple LLMs simultaneously
  • Price: From $50/month
  • Best for: Companies wanting competitive analysis

Peec AI

  • What it does: Specifically designed for GEO monitoring

The 7 metrics that matter

Not everything is equally important. Focus on these seven:

1. Citation Frequency

How often are you mentioned per 10 relevant queries? Measure per platform, per month.

Benchmark: 3 out of 10 queries is good. 5+ is excellent.

2. Citation Position

Are you mentioned first, second, or fifth? The first position gets the most trust.

3. Source Accuracy

Is what AI says about you correct? Right services, prices, location, contact details?

If it's wrong: Update your website. AI pulls information from your site. Outdated info = wrong citations.

4. Competitor Share

Which competitors appear in the same answers? How often? In what context?

5. Query Coverage

What percentage of relevant queries mention you? Measure separately for generic, specific, and problem queries.

6. Platform Coverage

On how many of the five major AI platforms are you mentioned? Some businesses score well on Perplexity but not on ChatGPT. Or vice versa.

7. Sentiment

Are you described positively, neutrally, or negatively? "A reliable choice" vs. "one of the options" makes a big difference.

The monthly measurement protocol

Reserve 60 minutes every first Monday of the month for your AI visibility check.

Minute 1-20: Manual tests

  • 10 queries on ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Document in your spreadsheet

Minute 20-35: Tool check

  • Review your Otterly.ai or Peec AI dashboard (if you use them)
  • Or: check Google Search Console for AI Overview data

Minute 35-50: Analysis

  • Compare with last month
  • Which queries are you scoring better on? Which worse?
  • Which content contributed to improvements?

Minute 50-60: Action items

  • Three concrete actions for the coming month
  • For example: "Write city page for Bristol" or "Expand FAQ on services page"

What "good" looks like

After three to six months of GEO optimization, you should see these results:

Metric Starting point After 3 months After 6 months
Citation frequency 0-1 of 10 2-3 of 10 4-5 of 10
Platforms with mention 0-1 2-3 4-5
Source accuracy Unknown 70-80% 90%+
Competitor share 100% competitor 60-70% competitor 40-50% shared

These numbers are based on our own experience and benchmarks from the GEO community. Your results depend on your sector, region, and competition.

The pitfall: measuring without acting

The biggest mistake is measuring without doing anything with the results. Every measurement round should end with three concrete actions. Not five. Not ten. Three. Achievable, specific, and targeted at the weakest metric.

Example action list:

  1. Citation frequency low on Perplexity → Write an FAQ page with concrete answers to common questions
  2. Source accuracy low → Update outdated prices and services on the website
  3. No mention in specific region → Create a city page

Start today

You don't need to buy a tool to get started. Open ChatGPT, ask three questions your customers would ask, and document the result. That's your baseline. Repeat it next month.

Measuring is the difference between "I think it works" and "I know it works."
